After more than 12 years in photography, I know how to make a captivating image. Yet the more interesting question is whether it says anything,

I'm Anastasiia Gornostai, a Ukrainian photographer based in Trondheim, Norway. I work across portraits, weddings, families, events and commercial photography, with projects throughout Norway and worldwide.

My approach has been shaped by years of working with very different people, places and stories. I care about composition, light and detail, but technique is only the beginning. What interests me is individuality — the particular expression, gesture, tension or softness that belongs to this person and no one else. This is especially important in my work with women. I'm not interested in fitting them into a predefined idea of femininity; I want to photograph the character already there.

I speak Ukrainian and English and am currently learning Norwegian. Moving countries has made me even more attentive to the ways people communicate beyond words — something photography, perhaps, has been teaching me all along.

I'm also a mother of three, which has given me a rather practical relationship with chaos, patience and the fact that the best moments rarely happen on command.

Having been a decade behind the camera, photography still keeps me curious. And I think that matters. A photographer who already knows exactly what every image should look like has probably stopped looking deeper.
